Turkey Point From The Atlantic
A Clean Day Is Getting Cleaner

Monday, October 27, 2014

  • Welcome to the PTN eWP blog by Art. Read the Policies, Procedures, and Merger items below, and comment, ask questions, as you see fit.  Just keep it clean.
  •  I know this is a new method of doing work in the nuclear industry, but, as we all know, it must be done.  The benefits are, of course, greater efficiency to help us all stop duplicating each others efforts; reduction in lost work orders; elimination of paper; and the list goes on.
  • Just keep in mind that we are all in this together, and it is going to be a challenge to get used to it.  We have done this many times before, but, hopefully, I have been able to use my argumentative nature to make it easiest for all of you who actually do work in the plant.
  • Here is a link to the eWP abstract from EPRI, which will help familiarize us with the nature of what we are doing with the effort. Click on it and it will take you to another page. Please don't forget to come back with your questions.

  • Another link to Youtube, I called "Frank's link..." is in the right sidebar of this blog for you to get a video overview from EPRI about out eWP package system.  Make sure you click on it to get more insight.

Let's see what we can do!

  1. Policies

All paperless Electronic Work Package (eWP)
information will be available on the company SharePoint website. It is important that you review where the files are in order to locate the milestones completed, the schedule set out before us, and assignments that you will need to complete.

eWP training will be available on a one time basis at each of the five nuclear sites. The work schedule will be adjusted to account for the reduction of personnel available for work. Upon initial training, online computer based training (CBT) will be available as well as instructional CD’s for use on company and on personal computers. It is strongly recommended that you complete the training prior to the day of execution of the paperless work orders.

There will be no printing of paper work orders after January 11, 2015 at the Turkey Point Plant (PTN). Review the schedule for paper shut off for the remaining sites, Duane Arnold (PDA), Seabrook (SEA), Port St Lucie (PSL), and Point Beach (PBN).

Verify that your department has established a location for the docking stations for charging the PC tablets. WiFi has been verified at each of the building areas outside of the plant at PTN. There will be no need for the station chargers to be connected to the CAT IV cable. Desktop versions will be pushed via IMSC to each supervisory level desktop.

All tablets must be returned to the station prior to departing at the end of each shift. If they are not, IMSC will automatically be notified via software and will contact the supervisor to advise if Law Enforcement should be dispatched to the location of the device. This is very important for all
personnel to understand that the devices will be tracked by GPS locators and will not be able to be used off the site.

  2. Procedures
Procedure development is in progress with many existing procedures governing work control
administration already adjusted or are being changed. With the launching of eWP, all processing of records, recording of data, procedure use and adherence, work order instructions will adhere to existing procedures and processes. Most administrative processes will either be automated such as closeout and archiving while others will prompt the performer for information. The software/ system will mature and change as time reveals more improvement opportunities.

One opportunity will be the development of “smart procedures” in which data may be entered that must be used in other databases, perform calculations, produce numerical and graphical data for use in procedures and system health reports. It will be extremely important to pay attention to the procedures and their outcomes in order to assure that
our initial efforts result in accurate extrapolation of the entered data. Follow procedures, however, be aware of the intent.

Do not blindly perform data entry without understanding where it is from and what it is going to be used for. This will prevent rework when the
outcome of calculations produce insufficient accuracy or simply are not logical outcomes.

Initially, all procedures will simply be PDF copies of the procedures in the site library. This will look and feel much like the paper currently used. Care must
be taken to move through the procedures to prevent stray marks. Much effort has been done to prevent this, however, be mindful of the new environment. Anticipate error likely situations and take good sound actions to avoid and prevent them.

  3. Merger
Merger and acquisitions are typically conducted in amicable efforts via the Juno Beach officers. Our job is to protect the investment both in time and in money.
This eWP project is one that is recognized to be a significant help to accomplish our daily jobs, eliminate the use of our world’s natural resource
for work orders, and to make more efficient use of our LAN to streamline the wasted hours we spend producing paper work orders, archiving paper work orders, locating paper work orders, and all of the myriads of convolutions we go through to complete nuclear level work. This process is precious to us and the planet. We must keep in mind the value we are giving the nuclear industry by using this process.

Initially, the process will have conditions that are difficult to overcome, however, other industries such as medical and a whole host of commercial ventures have shifted to electronic packages of some type.
Ours is unique and must be critically evaluated on a continuous basis.

This ongoing process improvement must not be considered as in any way a failure of the effort of eWP, but must be recognized for what it is: a new way of doing business in the nuclear power industry.

Competitors will be looking at our successes and failures in this endeavor. It is important that other nuclear sites are made aware of our lessons learned. It is equally important that the cost of this effort not be solely the burden of our own. Other companies must pay equally for this product or, they may bid to join us.

It is recognized that the vendor has made significant efforts to create software packages to assist us in this, and that those packages can be made available for others via our normal channels. Discussions of shared work and efforts to share our resources must be placed through our mergers and acquisitions
officers and our public relations officers in the Juno Beach office.
